Pakistan has seen significant improvements in security in recent years, and tourist areas in the northern mountains, major cities, and cultural sites are generally safe for visitors. The country has been increasingly recognized by international travel publications as a top emerging destination. As with any destination, exercise standard precautions, stay informed about local conditions, register with your embassy, and consider hiring local guides for remote areas.
The best time depends on your destination. For northern areas (Hunza, Skardu, Fairy Meadows), May-October is ideal when mountain passes are open. For cities like Lahore and Islamabad, October-March offers pleasant temperatures. Spring (March-April) brings spectacular cherry and apricot blossoms in the north. The Makran coast is best visited in winter (November-February).
Urdu is the national language and is widely understood. English is the official language used in government, business, and education. Over 75 regional languages are spoken, including Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi, Balochi, and Saraiki. In tourist areas and cities, English communication is generally not a problem. Learning a few basic Urdu phrases will be greatly appreciated by locals.
The Pakistani Rupee (PKR) is the official currency. ATMs are widely available in cities and accept international cards (Visa, Mastercard). It is advisable to carry cash when traveling to rural areas and northern regions where ATMs may be scarce. Currency exchange is available at airports, banks, and licensed money changers. Mobile payment apps like JazzCash and Easypaisa are also widely used.
